EOTech HWS: A Total Game-Changer on My SCAR 17

EOTech HWS: A Total Game-Changer on My SCAR 17
I’ve been shooting for years and have tried my fair share of red dots, but I finally decided to get my first EOTech Holographic Weapon Sight (HWS). After months of research, I decided on a model with the DCR (Danger Close Reticle) and a quick-detach base. Little did I know it would immediately become one of my favorite optics.
Mounting It on the SCAR 17
The first thing I did was slap it on my FN SCAR 17. The quick-detach base made installation ridiculously easy — just flip the levers and it locked down solid on the top rail. No fuss, no tools needed. What surprised me most? It was mostly zeroed right out of the gate. I took it to the range, and after just a few clicks of adjustment it was printing right where I wanted it. No major windage or elevation drama at all.
Shooting 3-Inch Groups Standing Unsupported at 25 Yards
Once it was dialed in, I started running drills. Standing unsupported at 25 yards with the SCAR 17 (which is no lightweight plinker), I was consistently shooting 3-inch groups. That’s impressive for any optic on a 7.62 battle rifle from that position. The sight picture was fast, the reticle was crisp even in bright daylight, the hold was natural, and the groups stayed tight. The SCAR’s recoil is stout, but the EOTech stayed glued to zero shot after shot.
Both-Eyes-Open Shooting Is Where It Shines
This is the part that sold me completely. With the EOTech’s holographic Danger Close Reticle (DCR), I can keep both eyes open the entire time. The modified speed ring with the chevron and aiming points gives me excellent close-range speed while still offering precise holdovers for longer shots. No tunnel vision — the full field of view keeps my situational awareness high, exactly what you want on a defensive or competition rifle. The DCR reticle is a real upgrade. The chevron and additional points make rapid target acquisition intuitive for danger-close distances while giving confident references out to 200 yards or more. It’s bright, clean, and cuts through clutter without overwhelming the target. Another standout feature is its full night vision compatibility, allowing me to pair it seamlessly with NVGs for low-light or no-light operations without losing the crisp DCR reticle performance.
Final Thoughts
My first EOTech HWS with the DCR reticle has exceeded every expectation. It went on the SCAR 17, stayed mostly zeroed with minimal adjustment, delivered tight 3-inch groups from standing unsupported at 25 yards, and made both-eyes-open shooting feel completely natural. The quick-detach mount means I’m not married to one gun — I can move it around as needed. If you’ve been on the fence about holographic sights or the new DCR pattern, I can honestly say this was worth the wait. It’s fast, durable, and just plain fun to shoot with.
